Operation Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro porters and guides

A Kilimanjaro climb is a team effort. Guides lead the route and pace. Porters carry group equipment and the agreed personal load.

Operation Kilimanjaro is run from Moshi by local mountain guides. Published climb inclusions describe English-speaking guides, cooks, porters, and crew wages aligned with Kilimanjaro National Park and KIATO references on those itineraries.

Roles on the mountain

Your lead guide sets the pace, checks how you are coping with altitude, and decides if the group should turn around. Assistant guides support larger groups. Cooks prepare camp meals. Porters move tents, food, and the duffel weight stated on your itinerary — several of our routes describe a personal load around 15 kg (about 30 lb).

Fair treatment

Operation Kilimanjaro's porter guidance references recommendations from the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP), which advocates fair treatment and improved working conditions for Kilimanjaro porters. If you want the current crew-welfare note for a specific departure, ask us when you enquire.

Tips for the crew are excluded from the climb price. See the tipping page for how we describe that guideline.
