Operation Kilimanjaro

Best time for a Tanzania safari

Wildlife is present year-round. The month you choose changes landscapes, road conditions, and whether you are timing a migration river crossing.

Operation Kilimanjaro plans northern Tanzania safaris that commonly include Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and sometimes Lake Manyara. There is no single best month for every traveler.

Dry months

June to October is the main dry window. Grass is shorter in many areas, animals gather near remaining water, and Tarangire’s elephant concentrations are a classic reason guests choose those months.

January to early March is another drier period often paired with Kilimanjaro climbs. It can also overlap with calving season on the southern Serengeti plains, which is different from the later northern river crossings.

Green months and the migration

The long rains around March to May bring lush scenery and fewer vehicles, with some softer roads. The short rains later in the year are often brief.

Wildebeest river crossings in the northern Serengeti are seasonal and not guaranteed on a given day. If a crossing is your priority, tell us the month you can travel and we will say whether a northern or southern Serengeti focus fits.
