Operation Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro routes compared

Route choice affects scenery, camping or hut style, how busy the trail feels, and — most importantly — how much time you have to acclimatize.

Marangu
Often called the Coca-Cola route, with hut accommodation and a more direct profile. Shorter options exist, but more days generally support better acclimatization.
Machame
A popular camping route known for varied scenery. Many climbers choose 6 or 7 days depending on experience and schedule.
Lemosho
Approaches from the west with strong scenic variety. Longer Lemosho itineraries are often chosen for a more gradual acclimatization.
Rongai
Approaches from the north and can stay drier when the southern slopes are wet.
Umbwe
A steeper, more direct approach that suits experienced, well-conditioned hikers who understand the acclimatization trade-off.
Shira
Starts higher on the western side. Discuss fitness and previous altitude experience before choosing it.
Northern Circuit
Sold and priced as 8 days. A 9-day version is also published. The imported day-by-day list does not match either duration, so it is not rewritten here.

Open a package for the published day-by-day itinerary. The right route still depends on your days, fitness, and whether you prefer camping or huts.
